Wood Burning Stoves – Rules and Regulations

Building and environment Law

There are severally regulations relating to buildings and environment when it comes to woodstoves. Single skinned flue needs to have a three times diameter in space with the flammable material to avoid fires. Double skinned may be preferable since, it is only one third that is allowed. It does not heat and thus cool enough and preferable to many individuals. The flue diameter must be less than stove outlet size. For the flexible liner the diameter should be 6 inch long.

Hearth

The measurement of the hearth should be as follows 225mm on the front, 150mm on the sides and 250mm deep. If the stove should not exceed more than 100°C, then it has to be 12mm thick. Those stove with no natural chimney have to have at least 840 by 840 mm of hearth.

Air ventilation

Stoves that are rated 5kw require to be kept in rooms with air ventilations. This is to increase the

air ventilation to avoid poisonous gases from posing dangers to the occupants of the houses.

Chimney

Correct diameter and tightness are main component. A stain steel tube with casing has a liner

inside the chimney and has insulator in the void. Using double skinned flue is recommended for

burning solid fuel and corrosion resistant grade which are 904 grade. A flexible tube is good for

insertion where the bends are in the chimney. To confirm all is good in the chimney, carry out a

smoke test to ascertain all is well with draught, height and there are no cold spells.

The chimney should be installed 60m vertically above the roof to avoid it flows affecting the fire

and efficiency of the stove.

Smoke detection

Gases from smoke are very harmful. The existing regulations are to install smoke detectors such

that they in case of any unchecked fire, the smoke is corrected. The battery is always checked for

good performance.

Environmental regulation

The regulating bodies give grant to install green machines. This is to conserve the environment

due to the use of wood fuel. In urban areas where they are smoke control areas, then you need to

install the approved model that is allowed by Clean Area Act.

Certain improvement such as using warm air by using a boiler is preferred by builders to use non

renewable resources. Availability of the wood fuel will dictate the choice of the stove to use.
